-Great Quote: “The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important” -Martin Luther King (p. 111)
-Aging: can be defined as progressive, multisystem impairments of function resulting in a loss of adaptive response to a stress or as teh “latter part of animate life” (p. 112)
– Gerontologists use the term: senescence to describe a progressive deterioration of many bodily functions over time (p. 112)
trends in population aging: (p. 112)
-20th century life expectancy rose 1900 = 47 y/o to 1999 = 73 for men and 79 for women.
– population aging is the result of less children and young people and an increase in the number of people over 60 y/o
– People over 65 y/o respresented 12.4% of the population in 2005. with the large size of the baby boom generation it is expected to increase to 20% of the population by 2030.
Physiology of Aging (p. 112-113)
– 7 stages = 1. infancy (birth to 2 years) 2. childhood (3-12 y/o) 3. adolescence (13-19 y/o) 4. early adulthood (20-39) 5. middle adulthood (40-64) 6. late adulthood (65 +) 7. Death
Mental Health and Aging (p. 113-114)
– Good mental health is important in active aging.
– there is a gen. trend toward cognitive decline and memory impairment in the aging process. Research is suggesting that there are some tx. that could slow the progression of the decline, but not reverse it (especially with AZ and other dementias)
– mental aging is associated in the areas of visual and verbal memory, visuouspatial abilities, immediate memory, the ability to name objects, reduced reflexes with problems in movement and safety and a slight slowing of thinking.
